march 24, 2003

On the evening of March 24, 2003, a thunderstorm brought vivid lightning and heavy rain to Norman....

...but that didn't stop these folks from continuing their basketball game.
At one point, someone drove up to the basketball court and rolled down their passenger side window as if to say something to the participants in the game. Nobody on the court appeared to acknowledge the driver...which shouldn't be surprising, considering they didn't seem to acknowledge the rain or the lightning either.
A brilliant CG strikes within 1/2 mile of the basketball courts....
...I've seen cows more responsive to lightning that close...
...a deafening crack of thunder follows....although I didn't see much evidence to suggest anyone on the court heard it.
These folks continued to brave the rain and the lightning for more than 20 minutes, finally giving up once the apartment managers shut off the lights at the basketball courts.

Take a look at this 11 second Quicktime Movie (about 500kb) depicting the CG that hit less than 1/2 mile away....
