june 2, 2004

A severe thunderstorm brought gusty winds and large hail to Norman on the afternoon of June 2, 2004. Following are some video captures of the hail taken near the intersection of Hwy 9 and SE 12th.....

The largest hailstone I found today bounced off the railing of my patio and hit me on the foot at 3:50pm CDT. I measured this hailstone at 1 inch in diameter - roughly the size of a quarter. This image was captured 3 or 4 minutes after the hailstone fell and had melted down slightly.
I braved the elements to gather some more hailstones.
These three hailstones ranged from 5/8 inch to 3/4 inch in diameter. I also have a penny in my hand for size reference.
