supercell in southwestern kansas


For all I knew, there could have been a tornado behind this rain curtain (There wasn't, but this storm had produced a tornado very close to this location just 25 minutes earlier).

This was the highlight of the trip right here. At 8:00, I found these huge hailstones along side of US 160 west of Protection KS. I measured the largest stones at 3 inches in diameter. I put them in the cooler, but unfortunately they did not make it all the way back to California.

A few storms actually tried to get going to the W and NW of the main storm, but had no chance with that monster ingesting all of the CAPE and instability in the area. Look what the shear did to this tower!
